VIII Latin American School of Soil Physics (Texcoco - Mexico, November 7-18, 2005)

Background Information
The Latin American School of soil Physics (ELAFIS), the Water Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Zones in Latin America and the Caribbean (CAZALAC) and the Association of Post Graduates in Agriculture Sciences of Montecillo, Mexico have joined their efforts to organize the VIII School, with the central topic: “Soil Physics and Preservation for Water Basin Planning”.

This course will take place on November 7 – 18, 2005 in the Montecillo Post-graduates’ Association Offices, Mexico. Renown professors from Belgium, Spain, Venezuela, Chile and Mexico will participate in the course.

Objectives

The course will be addressed to professionals from Latin America related to the soil and water resources issues, with the purpose of updating and deepening their knowledge on these matters.

On this occasion, the course will largely be focused on water and soil preservation, including aspects relating to soil physics, desertification, rainwater catchment and techniques to prevent and revert degradation processes in water basins.

The analysis of aspects related to methodologies to evaluate and predict hydrological condition of soils and their participation in the sustainable management to water basins will also be included in the course.

Contents
  • The ground as a three phase porous system
  • Evaluation of the porous system
  • Evaluation of mechanical resistance
  • Water content in the ground
  • Flow in saturated and non saturated zones
  • Infiltration and water retention in soil
  • Water distribution and movement in the ground
  • Water balance, irrigation and drainage, salinity
  • Flood hydro-gram, unit hydro-gram
  • Rain water catchment systems
  • Drought concepts
  • Soil evaluation
  • Fitting out rocky terrain
  • Superficial, sub-superficial and underground water run off
  • Degradation and desertification indicators
  • Erosion. Erosion factors
  • Soil and water preservation strategies
  • Water basins as a planning unit to develop and preserve natural resources
  • Field visits where soil and water preservation practices will be observed are also considered
