Water Resources and Climate Change

Objective

The goal of this activity is to support adaptation to climate change in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean, through an increased awareness on the impact of climate change on water resources. This enables to define strategies to adapt to expected changes in water resources under the new climate scenarios.

These strategies will focus on three likely areas for action: water shortage (drought), excess rainfall and /or increase in the frequency of extreme events (floods).

Specific Objectives

Specifically, the activity focuses on:

a) capacity building of early-career professionals on the application of Near Term Climate Change Scenario Analysis for applications in hydrology and drought vulnerability analysis;

b) the development of a set of pilot basin case studies in the region that identify their exposure of climate change on hydrometeorological parameters; and

c) the determination of the vulnerability of inter-annual and decadal variability, as well as climate change impact on water resources in the pilot basins in the region.

Expected results

  • Tools provided to pilot countries to identify climatic variability on different timescales to be coupled with hydrological models
  • Participants gained experience through one or more case studies on the application of the software provided to develop climate scenarios at near-term timescales (2020-2035)
  • The participants count with a first version of these scenarios for one pilot basin in their country

A work plan defined for follow-up action and coupling of the climate scenarios with hydrological models

Project Activities

  • International Workshop 'Development of near-term climate scenarios (2020-2035) for vulnerable watersheds to climatic variability at the interanual, decadal and climate change time scales'

An introductory workshop was held in La Serena, Chile, from 04-08 August 2014, with four pilot countries (Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Colombia).

An overview of the course content and main outputs can be found here.

  • The Second International Workshop 'Development of near-term climate scenarios (2020-2035) for vulnerable watersheds to climatic variability at the interanual, decadal and climate change time scales'

A follow-up workshop is to be held in Cartagena, Colombia, from June 30 to July 3 2015, with eight pilot countries (Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Honduras and Ecuador).

An overview of the course content and main expected results can be found here.
